How to travel for free and develop. I will tell you how

When I was 9 years old, my father asked me what I will do with my inheritance which, in fact, was an old crumbling jeep of Russian brand and framing of an unfinished house in a swamp. And, full of decisiveness and clear purposefulness, I said “I will sell everything and will travel!”

Still can’t understand why I told that, although, nobody was talking with me about foreign countries in my family and travelling was not a popular way of life in the post-soviet period in Russia. My parents have never been even to Moscow for all their life, and the chance to go somewhere was negligibly low.

My experience

However, my first travel for free happened in 2001 when I won to be a camp counsellor in some volunteer project in America with almost 5 months stay. It is worth mentioning that volunteer projects traditionally cover the cost of travel, accommodations, insurance and daily expenses. Of course, this doesn’t make you prosperous in the financial side but definitely in the spiritual one.

This was my first experience of getting knowledge about funding. Later, the process of developing worldwide foundation of various funding organization happened in the purpose of increasing international mobility in the frame of globalization. This presented me more opportunities, and later, I participated in a volunteer project in America, another time for an internship at the University of Madison, at Bologna University in Italy, at Ouro Preto Univesity in Brazil, at Burapha University in Thailand and in many other projects. I didn’t spend my own money; moreover, I earned.

Is it possible?

Almost every country has its own funds for cultural, educational and sport mobility. Such type of fund possesses financial support provided by the government. Personally, I prefer such type of program because it is more reliable. As a rule, they provide a full package including airplane ticket both sides, study coverage and insurance, which is very important in nowadays life and tuition fee. However, not all such funds ensure airplane ticket coverage which is mainly depending on the economic position of the country. At the same time, the level of trustworthiness is higher in the period of any worldwide crises since the budget has already been planned and transferred to the organization for the whole period of your study or internship.

The other variety is the funds of the organization that is recruiting. It could be a university with short- or long-term courses, as well as some scholarship opportunities. Almost every foreign university has a scholarship section on the website that details the opportunities to cover tuition costs. However, such kind of scholarship covers mostly study payment and tuition fee, which is also a good way to see the world with limited expenses.

Why don’t people use these opportunities? Is it a lack of information or skills in winning these competitions? No matter what the answer is, the possibilities to travel for free do exist nowadays.
